A simple invention could help protect sharks from fishing.

Each year, 50 million sharks are killed as bycatch. Bycatch is when fishers catch animals they weren’t targeting.

Scientists created zinc-and-graphite blocks that produce a small electric current in saltwater. They attached the blocks to fishing hooks. This kept some sharks from being caught.
