animal tracks graphic

Animals leave behind footprints, also called tracks, when they walk through sand and mud. For thousands of years, Indigenous communities have used tracks to find animals and to see where they travel. Today, scientists are using artificial intelligence (AI) to track animals in new ways.

An organization called WildTrack takes photos of footprints and then uses AI models to identify the animal that made the tracks. Sometimes, the AI can tell the animal’s age and if it is male or female.

WildTrack’s AI model can already identify 41 types of animals, including rhinos, leopards, and lions.
