Canopy bridges are built to connect tree canopies across roads. These structures help wildlife avoid cars and move through the forest safely. But which kind of canopy bridge is best for animals?

To find out, scientists in the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica set up camera traps to monitor five different canopy bridge designs, three made of rope and two made of plastic mesh.

The science team documented 2,231 animal crossings from December 2020 to June 2023. The cameras captured possums, monkeys, kinkajous, and even snakes crossing the bridges. The animals preferred rope bridges.
