Beavers are ecosystem engineers. This means that they alter their environment in a significant way. How do beaver’s do this? Busy beavers build dams out of logs, sticks, and mud. A beaver uses its chisel-like teeth to gnaw around the base of a tree. Crash! Another log for the dam. Beavers drag the logs they have cut to water and float them into position. Beaver dams alter the flow of water in a river or stream, creating wetlands that are home to many other species.
