High in the Amazon rainforest, scientists have set up artificial nest boxes fitted with hidden cameras to observe the secret lives of macaws. The scientists are testing if artificial nests can help birds in forests where nesting trees have been cut down.
In one nest, cameras captured the entire breeding cycle of a pair of red-and-green macaws. Watch the video to see how the parents successfully raised a beautiful chick.
Educator tip: If you could place a hidden camera in nature, where would you place it? Beside deep-sea vent, in an underground ant nest, or high in a treetop? What would you hope to observe and why?
