Jaguars are known for their powerful roars. But recently, scientists recorded something they’ve never captured before: wild jaguars meowing.

In Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, camera traps captured two female jaguars making calls that sound a lot like domestic cat meows. It is possible the meows help mother jaguars and cubs communicate in dense forest.

This discovery shows that even the world’s most studied big cats still hold secrets waiting to be uncovered.
