Asia’s saola is a real-life unicorn. This horned animal from the Annamite Mountains of Vietnam and Laos was only described by scientists in 1993. It is so rare that it hasn’t been captured on camera since 2013. But that may change soon.

A team in Laos is doing an intensive search for evidence of the saola, using sniffer dogs and the latest in conservation tech. Some experts worry the saola may already be close to extinction, but the more we learn about this elusive animal and its habitat, the better our chance to protect it.
