A data recorder called an iButton is helping scientists study and protect a critically endangered tortoise.

The Mojave Desert tortoise (scientific name: Gopherus agassizii) is native to the Mojave Desert of Southern California. One of the threats it faces is rising temperatures. Scientists are using the iButton to understand how hot the tortoises get, and what temperatures they prefer in the burrows where they spend most of their time.
