The largest river turtle is the South American river turtle, also called the Arrau turtle. These turtles grow to a length of nearly one meter (over 3 feet). Recently, scientists counting turtles in the Brazilian Amazon recorded a nesting area with about 41,000 adult female turtles. This is the largest turtle nesting site ever recorded. It is also a good sign that a long-term conservation project is making a difference to the turtles in this area.
