Fun facts about ears
- Outer ear flaps are called pinnae! Can you find your pinnae?
- Upright ears help animals localize sounds, or figure out where sounds are coming from. The fennec fox, snow leopard, and white-tailed deer are examples of animals with upright ears. They move their ears to help pinpoint sounds.
- Elephants flap their large ears to help cool down. This is called thermoregulation. Elephants sometimes use their ear movement to communicate. For instance, elephants may spread their ears to indicate alarm or as a threat. They flap their ears quickly when they are excited or meeting other elephants.
Educator tip: Have students create their own zoomed-in animal puzzles using Canva, Google Slides, or another classroom-friendly design tool. Then have classmates guess the answers!
