Giraffes have unique patterns of spots on their bodies that stay with them from birth through adulthood. These are their “fingerprints.”

For decades, scientists have used these markings to identify individual giraffes and study things like where they go, who they hang out with, and how many giraffes there are. But identifying and re-identifying giraffes takes scientists a lot of time. Now, artificial intelligence is speeding up this task.
A new AI algorithm can quickly compare a photo of a giraffe to thousands of others in a dataset and find a match. This new tech is helping scientists study and protect these long-necked giants.
