Get Outside! Take a nighttime nature walk

Have you ever taken a nature walk at night?

Here are few suggestions for what to listen and look for at night:

Listen. Can you hear the sounds of nocturnal animals going about their business: hunting for food, traveling, and sharing their daily news? Can you hear the sounds of plants rustling in the wind?

Look. Look up at the sky. Can you see the stars? Can you see the moon? Sunlight reflecting off a full moon brightens the night sky. Do you think animals behave differently when the moon is full compared to when the night sky is darker?

Look for wildlife. If you want to use a flashlight to help you find nighttime creatures, a red light is less disruptive to wildlife. To create a DIY red light, cover the bulb of a regular flashlight with red tissue paper or red plastic.

Look who glows! If you have an ultraviolet (UV) light, see if you can find any organisms that fluoresce. Scientists have found that many different types of animals, such as scorpions and even some mammals, fluoresce under UV light.
