What do you think these polar bears are saying or thinking?
What is this cartoon about?
These polar bears are wearing satellite tags. Scientists use satellite tags to learn about where bears move, how they interact, and other aspects of their behavior. Tags allow scientists to monitor bears in remote and challenging conditions, like Arctic sea ice.
The polar bear on the right is wearing a satellite collar. The bear on the left has a newer tag that attaches directly to its fur. This tag is called the “burr on fur” tag because of its sticking ability, similar to a burr on your clothes.
Fur tags have several benefits over other tag types. They can be used on all polar bears, including adult males and subadults. And they are minimally invasive. However, they don’t stay attached for a long time.
