Biorobots are robots that look and move like wild animals. This exciting technology may help us learn new things about animals and their needs. For example:
- Filmmakers and scientists can remotely film or observe wildlife with minimal disruption to their natural behavior.
- Scientists can test how animals might react to a predator or competitor.
- Biorobots can reach places that are difficult or unsafe for humans, such as remote terrain or crocodile-infested rivers.
- Scientists and engineers can use biorobots to study how living animals move and also to work out how extinct species might have moved.
But biorobots are not yet a mainstream tool for scientists. Creating these robots is difficult, time-consuming, and expensive. And they don’t always do exactly what we would like them to do.
