The Smallest Bat

The Smallest Bat: Kitti's Hog-Nosed Bat (Craseonycteris thonglongyai)

This species of bat is commonly considered to be the smallest species of mammal in the world, weighing in at only 2 grams. They are nocturnal and live in Thailand and Myanmar feeding on small insects. Major threats to this species include tourism, religious visits to the caves in which they live, and fertilizer collection. Fragmentation, resulting in inbreeding within the population is also a main issue to the welfare of this species. These elements have had a noticeable effect on the species, and now the IUCN Red List lists them under Vulnerable.
